The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is a standardized test designed to assess the English language proficiency of non-native English speakers. It is widely recognized by universities, colleges, and employers around the world as a reliable measure of a candidate's ability to understand and use English in an academic setting. TOEFL is developed and administered by the Educational Testing Service (ETS).
Test Format
TOEFL offers multiple formats, including the TOEFL iBT (Internet-Based Test) and the TOEFL Paper-Based Test (PBT). The TOEFL iBT is the most common version and is delivered online, allowing for efficient testing
TOEFL iBT:
Reading Section (60-80 minutes)
- Three to four passages with 36-56 questions.
Listening Section (60-90 minutes):
- Six to nine passages with 34-51 questions
Speaking Section (20 minutes):
- Six tasks, including speaking based on reading and listening
Writing Section (50 minutes):
- Two tasks: an integrated task and an independent task.
TOEFL Paper-Based Test (PBT):
Listening Comprehension (30-40 minutes):
- Three parts with 50 questions
Structure and Written Expression (25 minutes):
- 40 questions assessing grammar and writing skills
Reading Comprehension (55 minutes):
- Three to four passages with 50 questions.
Writing (30 minutes):
- One essay task.

Scoring
TOEFL iBT scores are divided into four sections: Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing. Each section receives a score ranging from 0 to 30, and the total score is the sum of these section scores, with a maximum total score of 120. The TOEFL PBT uses a different scoring scale, with a total possible score of 677.

TOEFL offers official study materials, including practice tests and guides, to help individuals prepare for the exam. Additionally, numerous third-party resources, courses, and textbooks are available to assist candidates in familiarizing themselves with the test format and improving their language skills.
